How leasing works

Bike leasing through a company usually works through a model called salary conversion or salary sacrifice. Here are the basic steps and elements of how bike leasing through a company works:

1. Bietet der Arbeitgeber die Möglichkeit eines Firmenrades?

If the employer offers its employees company bike leasing, it cooperates with selected bike leasing companies and has a registered account on their online portals. The company bike leasing is processed via this account. Such bike leasing companies have their bike trading partners.

2. The employee chooses a company bike of his or her choice.

The employee selects a bicycle that he would like to lease. This can often be done through specialised leasing providers who offer a wide range of bicycles and e-bikes. There is no limit to the purchase price. Accessories that can be leased can also be included in the purchase price. Both all folding bikes and cargo bikes are available through leasing platforms.

3. Monatliche Leasingrate berechnen und Leasingvertrag erstellen.

The employee can calculate the monthly leasing rate using a leasing calculator provided by the respective leasing company. Insurance can also be selected as an option. The different insurance packages range from pure maintenance insurance to "all-round carefree" offers. The leasing calculator then shows the rate for direct purchase. After selecting the leasing period and optional additional packages, the leasing contract can be created online via the registered employer account on the leasing company's online portal. After the contract has been confirmed by the employee, employer and leasing company, the selected company bike is picked up from VELLO Bike with the handover protocol and the invoice is issued directly to the leasing company.

4. The employee can use the new leased bike for commuting and private use.

The employee can use the bike both for commuting and for private use. The bike remains the property of the leasing provider for the duration of the leasing period. At the end of the leasing period (24/36/48 months), the employee usually has the option of buying the bike at a residual value, returning it, or entering into a new leasing contract. If the employee chooses a new company bike, VELLO and the leasing company have the option of paying out the company bike at the residual value.

5. WIE ENTSTEHT DIE ERSPARNIS ?

Since the leasing amount is deducted from the gross salary, the employee's taxable income is reduced, which leads to tax advantages through the reduction in income tax and the social security assessment basis. The employee therefore pays less tax and receives considerable savings of around 20% to 45% compared to a direct purchase.

An example:

A company bike costs €5,000 including accessories and is leased for a period of 48 months. Thanks to the salary conversion, the monthly leasing rate, including basic insurance, is €52.40. The effective purchase price of the bike is therefore only €2,765.36 (48 x €52.40 + residual value €250) and the savings are €2,234.64 (45%).

Advantages:

  • Tax advantages: Reduction in taxable income.
  • Flexibility: Ability to use high-quality bikes.
  • Maintenance and insurance: Often included.
