Get Your VELLO Bike Ready for the Cycling Season: A Spring & Summer Preparation Guide

As the days get longer and the temperatures rise, it’s time to bring your VELLO bike out of hibernation and get it ready for the adventures ahead! Whether you ride a VELLO classic with gears and a belt drive, the VELLO Bike+ with its Zehus electric motor, or the VELLO SUB cargo e-bike powered by Bosch, proper maintenance ensures a smooth and enjoyable ride throughout spring and summer. Here’s a step-by-step guide to prepping your bike for the season ahead.
1. Give Your Bike a Thorough Cleaning
Before hitting the road, start with a deep clean to remove dust, grime, and any residue from winter storage.
-
Use a mild bike cleaner or warm soapy water with a soft brush or sponge.
-
Pay special attention to the frame, wheels, and drivetrain.
-
For belt-driven models, wipe the belt with a damp cloth, no lubrication is needed! If the belt is noisy, a little water or silicone spray can help.
-
If you have a VELLO Bike+ or VELLO SUB, be careful around the electric components and avoid direct water exposure. Use a damp cloth for gentle cleaning.
2. Check the Tires and Wheels
Your tires play a crucial role in comfort and safety, so inspect them thoroughly.
-
Look for cracks, worn-out treads, or embedded debris.
-
Inflate tires to the recommended pressure (usually found on the tire sidewall) for a smooth ride and better efficiency.
-
Spin the wheels to ensure they rotate freely and true (no wobbles or rubbing).
3. Inspect the Brakes
A well-functioning brake system is essential for safe riding.
-
Squeeze the brake levers to check responsiveness and stopping power.
-
Inspect brake pads for wear and replace them if they appear too thin.
-
Check the rotors for signs of warping or contamination.
4. Test the Drivetrain (Belt or Chain)
-
Belt Drive (VELLO Classic & VELLO Bike+): Ensure the belt is properly tensioned and free from cracks. No lubrication is required, but if the belt squeaks, use a damp cloth or silicone spray.
-
Chain Drive (VELLO SUB): Clean the chain with a degreaser and lubricate it with a high-quality bike chain lubricant to ensure smooth operation. Wipe off excess lube to prevent dirt buildup.
-
Shift through all gears to confirm smooth and precise gear changes. If shifting is not smooth, check cable tension and make necessary adjustments.
5. Check the Battery & Electronics (For VELLO Bike+ & VELLO SUB)
For e-bike owners, battery health is key to maximizing range and efficiency.
-
VELLO Bike+ (Zehus Motor):
-
Fully charge the battery before your first ride.
-
Check the regenerative braking system and ensure it’s functioning properly.
-
Use the Zehus app to check for firmware updates and fine-tune power settings.
-
If storing the bike for an extended period, keep the battery at around 50-70% charge to maintain longevity.
-
-
VELLO SUB (Bosch Motor):
-
Charge the Bosch battery fully before riding.
-
Check that the display and assist modes function correctly.
-
If necessary, update the Bosch system firmware via an authorized dealer.
-
Store the battery in a dry, cool place when not in use.
-
6. Tighten All Bolts & Adjust Components
-
Ensure all bolts, especially on the folding mechanism, handlebars, and saddle, are secure.
-
Adjust the seat height and handlebar position for optimal comfort.
-
Test the folding mechanism on your VELLO bike to ensure smooth and secure operation.
Happy cycling!
